Last night my cousin Paul and his family threw a massive party as a "thank you" to all the people who have supported them as Paul has literally battled pancreatic cancer over the last year. The party was hopping with people coming and going, laughing, playing bagpipes, splashing in the pool, connecting. And lots of margaritas and beer, but since it is Labor Day weekend, I spose that is ok...! It was a very meaningful evening and I was able to sit with my uncle for a bit and have a big discussion about how much my visits to Somerville meant to me as a kid. How hearing "I love you" at their house was so strange as it wasn't said in my own home. How being with my cousins meant going to church and then visiting the nursing home to see my uncle's aunt on a Sunday, because that is just what we were supposed to do. We had a profound talk and he said how glad he was that we did talk about this stuff as he wouldn't want to have died not knowing it. Talk about meaningful. But Yuckle Paul, you better not go anywhere for a good long time -- you are still a kid, being in your 80's be darned!
That was an unexpected gem from last night's party. It was a special night of connecting with people who all love the same amazing guy, my cousin. As he continues his battle with this terrible disease, he does so with the love and support of so many people. It was evident last night that he matters so much to so many. He is a treasure and the strength with which he faces this cancer is dumbfounding. Pally, love ya to bits. Keep fighting.
What will you make today?
