When I've used digital prints there are a few issues that I run up against that are less than satisfying. I am concerned about lightfastness and longevity of the fabric. Despite being used more and more in artwork, there aren't a lot of online resources that go into this issue. The surface texture of a digital print on fabric is very fine and soft with the cotton sheets I've used, maybe too soft? I've tried heavier canvas but then the detail is lacking. Maybe it is the scale of the work that needs to determine the fabric type. The print "rubs off" a bit as it is handled for embellishment. Or, maybe it is just the surface pilling ever so slightly to make me think it is rubbing off. Texture is such an important element in my artwork that I notice it. The size limitations and cost of printing at home can be prohibitive, too. I'm tossed about whether to invest in a Epson printer and ink system to allow for printing at home "on demand" or using a commercial service like Spoonflower or the UK company Fingerprint.
I suppose I could use both. The commercial service would yield larger prints that would take me so long to render with stitches and embellishments that I wouldn't be needing very many. The home set up would provide smaller details that could be physically layered into the pieces, giving me a sense of texture and relief. Hmmmm...possibilities are endless! I think it is time to take a break from the way I've been working for a long time now and dive into something very new and artistically exciting. Love an open field of possibilities!
