At the time of the last reunion five years ago I was good friends with two women from the same graduation year. One was planning to go to the reunion, one was not. We decided to have an early party at a local Irish bar before the actual reunion. At some point in the afternoon I made the strange decision to bring a parrot with me to the evening event as it was a casual affair. Along came Cairo, diapered and leashed, who behaved like a perfect feathered gentleman all evening. He even went out on the dance floor with some people. I had fun, the night went well, and Cai brought people laughs and smiles, as he always does. The next day someone from my graduation year posted that he had pooped on her, as well as some other nasty comments about me. Really? Yeah, it was a goofy decision to bring Cai along, but to make up that the bird pooped on you and make snide remarks online at someone's expense? Some kids never grow up.
Fast forward to this morning, when the reunion organizer joked that this year's reunion will be pirate themed. I posted "Who needs a parrot? KIDDING" and wouldn't you know, a few people popped up and said "Bring him!" and that he was so fun to have at the last one. Who knew? I posted that nasty comments were made after the last one and that it obviously wasn't well received. Then the person who used to follow me home from the high school threatening to beat me up with her friends, the one that scared the living crap out of me, said "Screw them. Bring one!" While I would't bring a bird along this year as I do not plan to begin the party five hours in advance of the reunion (ahem.) it is good to know that some people DO grow up, and that past pains can legitimately be forgotten. Cheers. Maybe I will go, after all...
What will you make today?
