Reading about the nature of the art world today, and came across this older article in the Guardian. Love the simplicity of Ivan Massow's stance on the absurd nature of contemporary art. I question it, too. Where is the craft? There are plenty of amazing artists with shockingly strong skills out there -- I am fortunate to know some -- but they are few and far between. There is also a sense that a real work of art has to be some indecipherable, "craftless" entity in order for it to be real "art." Consider Massow's qute (pertaining to the UK, but relevant here, too):
I suppose I could create a powerful statement about the frailty of human existence today by videotaping my messy, tissue strewn house today. I will refrain. Cheers!
