A couple days ago I was looking through old digital photos for a particular image when I came across a quilt I started years ago. It featured a large color image of an encyclopedia illustration juxtaposed on black and white silk screened fabrics of the text from the actual page it came from. It struck me as having potential to be the direction my brain is now going in. I thought "Why isn't that finished -- I like that one!" Yesterday the search commenced, in the short time I had before my night class. The Graveyard gave up multiple attempts at larger pieces of art, but this one was not among them. Knowing that despite my obscenely messy art room I am fundamentally organized, I have to believe the piece is gonzo, trashed, and didn't make the cut when I did my last purging. I think I made it after a particularly negative romantic break up and I didn't want to work on it due to associations. It was strange and disappointing to know it is gone, but also is affirming in that it helps me establish the new direction my brain wants my hands to travel. Back to the drawing, or silk screening, board.
In the process though, I unearthed several large quilted collages that I plan to quilt and cut up in to abstract pieces just for fun. They might become small wall pieces or even possibly jewelry. If I ever have time to get to them! I also found an enormous amount of tracings and patterns I've made over the years, some of which have become quilts, and some are still waiting. I need a good 72 hours of sorting and filing to get that stack under control. Sigh. Maybe Monday. Ready, set, go!
What will you make today?
