Today I'm posting about the elegant work of artist Sophie Standing. I love how she uses negative space -- dare I say unembellished surfaces -- surrounding the richly embellished and developed drawings. She works on canvas, building up layers of fabric and thread on top of a drawn image. The lacy figures seem so realistic despite their paisley and sometimes recognizable fabric elements. I like the rhino and elephant images the best -- celebrating the threatened species in such a beautiful way. Just gorgeous! Saturated textures always get my attention, and how she integrates monochromatic drawing with the fabric elements is nothing short of delicious. I can learn so much from looking at her art, and wish I could see it in person. Are the fabrics translucent? Are the drawn lines visible, or are all of them reproduced in thread? What exactly is that background? Beautiful, mysterious work.
What will you make today?
