Yesterday I got the long, stringy sunflower seedlings in the ground. I mowed the grass on the side of the house a a bit (except for the wheat grass that refuses to submit to Filomena the Hand Mower) and weeded the irises, They finally are coming up and blossoming. The clematis is actually blooming, too, and the five sprigs of mesculin that I started from seeds haven't died yet. Such a gardner I am this year...we won't mention the zinnias. They chose not to live when I tried to plant them. It was sad.
As the rain falls and Hapi remarks "Cold. chilly." and "fresh wash?" (his word for bath or shower) I think of all the little critters in the swampy area behind my house. What are they doing right now? Are the baby bunnies hiding in a den, keeping warm and dry with their moms? Are the owls perching with their heads tucked around onto their backs, keeping their eyes closed? Or are they opening their wings to feel the rain? Did the baby foxes we've been seeing around stick their little black noses out of the den to see what all the racket was about when it thundered? I like living so close to the "wilds" -- you never know what is out there, and the connection to nature is palpable.
Boy do I need to fix my gutters and drainpipes. I can hear the rain doing things it probably shouldn't. This task is on The List, but the list is very long. Endless, really. At least since getting The Back done I can actually DO some of this stuff! That thought keeps me from getting frustrated and overwhelmed into a state of non-action and defeat.
Class starts Thursday night at Create! I am so looking forward to seeing everyone and getting our stitching on together. Create is a very special place and even more so after a break from teaching!
For an art link today, here is an artist from Maine, Mathea Daunheimer, who now lives in New Zealand. Her website is called Esparta Fiber Arts. She creates drawings/paintings on fabric and then, in her words, "quilts the heck out of them." I am drawn to the color schemes and of course the reference to NZ wildlife. She even has a Kakapo quilt! Since I live with a parrot with NZ origins, I love her art and envy her experiences! Glad she creates about them. Cheers!
