So far this year is not a happy one. Sadly, an essential member of the Parker community passed away last week. Bill Cowles (called “Mr. Cowles” while I was a student at the school, and for a couple years after I was hired back as an adult, when I was still to intimidated to call him by his first name) was a physically imposing man. As half of the inimitable administrative duo of “Jack and Bill,” he was responsible for discipline of many, many generations of students. He is someone that so many people remember -- not for his massive size, but for his kindness, fairness, and good humor. He never missed an opportunity to offer a sincere compliment when I needed one, and was always there even after he retired (via Facebook, no less) to offer his perspective on school changes and community issues. A true mentor and fixture in my understanding of what Parker Junior High / Middle School was all about. Here’s to you, Bill -- may there be no three period lunch duties in heaven, as that is where I am sure you will be.
