Creative energy can be just what is need to make it over the hurdle of the winter blues. For me, these seasonal low points are a reality I have to acknowledge. My mental energy and attitude just drops. It is more than seasonal, though, as systemic inflammation itself can contribute to depression. A new study discusses the role of inflammation on the brain here. Another good article from Prevention Magazine summarizes the relationship between those evil cytokines (active in RA) and depression, here. Depression is considered a part of RA due to the impact of physical limitations, consistent fatigue, and high levels of chronic pain. A depressive episode can precede or coexist with a physical flare up, or just bubble under the surface making normal day to day struggles seem that much more difficult to overcome. My answer to all this is to stay creatively active and engage the creative mind in artistic problem solving and productivity -- make, teach, learn, grow. Cheers!!
