Feeling gratitude is more important than feeling insulted, angry, or cheated. The happiest people I know appreciate the little things in their lives as much as the big things. My cousin, Billy Ropple, is a Californian laid back free spirit who is always saying "Blue skies!" I have to agree. Little acts of seeing the positive instead of dwelling on the negatives can shift the energy of life. While not perfect at it (is anyone?) I do try. The little surprising kind gestures and words from people make life good, and I never overlook them.
Yesterday was the first day back to school after spring break. The kids were tired and sad looking, and did their best not to remain sleeping during a second period art class filled with a little note taking and listening. Even I was winded just giving out info! At the end of class, a really sweet student gave me an envelope with a card with the Eiffel Tower on it and a pen in the form of a paint tube. Over vacation he traveled to Paris and visited the Louvre. In the card he said such kind, appreciative things. I was taken aback that he'd think of making such a kind gesture while HE was on such an exciting trip! So thoughtful and much more positive than anything else. It is pinned above my desk to remind me that thoughtful gestures and kind words can truly mean the difference between living a happy life, and just living.
What will you make today?
