Wouldn't it be interesting to know why we dream? Are we experiencing alternate realities with our consciousness, or somehow connecting with others in different places? Or are we just making it all up with our imaginations when our brains are not supervising themselves? Or, are we revisiting past or future times? Math is proving that the real world looks a lot different than our simple understanding of a linear progression through time and space. Maybe the recesses of our brains already understand and are exploring. One of life's enigmas, for sure!
Many artists work with dreams as source imagery for their artwork. I am not one of those people, however I can "see ahead" how a work of art will be finished when I begin. It is like a little "flash" in my head that shows me what the idea could be, and then it disappears until the piece is done. Another weird brain trick that makes me question the nature of time and space. When I first saw the idea for the current piece I am working on in "flash form" I saw embellishments that I hadn't had -- certain beads and threads. Now they are in the piece, as I must have seen them and bought them, rather unconsciously, while I was working on constructing it. Another creative "dejavu" moment. As an artist, I have to embrace the strangeness of process and let it happen, using whatever parts of my mind need to do the work. I have to let the mathematicians and physicists figure out why it all works.
What will you make today?
